There will be two Hunter Education classes offered in Douglas County this fall. The first class will be held on Sept. 16 and 17 at the Ava Middle School cafeteria. Class time will be from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16 and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17. There will be a lunch break on Saturday from 12 to 1 p.m. Parents are welcome to pick up the students or they can bring a lunch.
The second Hunter Education class will be held on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 at the Skyline School. Class time will be from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30 and 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1. There will be a lunch break from 12 to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Students will need to bring a lunch on Saturday.
Students can register for either class on line at www.mdc.mo.gov and go to the hunter education link to find the class they want to attend. There is no fee to take hunter education classes.
Parents or guardians are welcome and encouraged to attend either class with their students. Certification is limited to those 11 years of age or older. Those successfully completing either course will receive a hunter education certification card from the Department of Conservation. Such certification is mandatory before a hunter can purchase a hunting license in many states. Students will not need to bring any items with them. Books and pencils will be provided.
Included in the training will be firearm safety, information about firearms and ammunition, the role of a hunter, wildlife management and conservation, responsibilities of the outdoors person, outdoor ethics and Missouri laws.
