Ava VFW Has Monthly Meeting

The Ava VFW post 5993, conducted its quarterly meeting Tuesday evening with Commander Larry Morrison leading the meeting.  The meeting consisted of Post business, payment of bills and committee reports.

This week the post received three outstanding achievement awards.  The post was recognized for the year 2010 when Richard Stitt was commander.  We salute him for his outstanding leadership as our commander.  The certificates will be framed and displayed in the post.

The VFW is still seeking new members and current members who will help with some of the duties of operating a post or helping with the Saturday evening games.

The requirement to be a member of the VFW is to be a veteran of a foreign war.  If you are a war time veteran, we encourage you to bring your DD214 (discharge paper) to the VFW and let us help you become a member and help you receive any benefits from the Veterans Administration (VA) to which you are entitled.

We have service officers here that are trained to help veterans process the forms and help get them through all the red tape.  If you are a veteran or know a veteran, we encourage you to contact us.  Benefits do not begin until the date the paperwork is received at the VA.  Benefits will then be retroactive to the date the papers were received.  If anyone has questions they can call the Post at 683-6741 and ask for or leave a message for Etta Mecke.  She is an excellent service and will do all she can to assist you.

Thank a veteran. It was our honor to serve you.
