I wonder what it would be like to follow God around for a day? I wonder if it would be like standing in front of a class of 21 unruly eighth graders? All boys except for one; bless her heart, she has to be brave to last through this semester. What must God think when He looks on His unruly creation? Could it be the same as the one in charge of the budding young men and, of course, the one girl?
The first thing that has to happen in the class is finding a way to maintain order. It takes more than rules (laws). Rules (laws) are ignored. Enforcement only works from one case to the next—remember there are 20 young teenage boys, oh, and one girl.
I wonder if God has trouble getting the attention of creation? Just like the class, it can be the most rewarding and beautiful experience of a lifetime and still be missed. Why? Because hardening has occurred; hardening of the head, of the heart, of the soul. How can hardening be un-hardened? In the case of the class, it was the girl. Everyone who teaches knows that if you have a class of boys, the presence of a girl will eliminate some of the challenges. Instead of rowdiness they work on rising to a higher standard—impressing the girl.
Does God have attention getters? Let’s see. There are the prophets of the OT, there is Jesus and the Holy Spirit, angels, believers, the church and the Bible. Opportunities are plentiful for anyone who wants to grow in the spirit. Only the ones who are hardened will miss it. What is it? It’s the love of God which is always there and eternity, the chance to be with Him forever.
