Today we celebrated the Second Sunday after Pentecost using the following Bible readings:
Jeremiah 28:5-9, Psalm 89:1-4, 15-18, and the New Testament Romans 6:12-23, Gospel: Matthew 10: 40-42.
“Whoever welcomes you welcomes me”, said Jesus, “and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.” (Matthew 10:40, NRSV). Let us welcome one another, and, in so doing, welcome Jesus into our hearts!
Our lector was Jerry Johnson.
Today we prayed for all the survivors and the victims of that terrible tornado in Joplin as well as the devastation all over our country. There will more people from our church going to help the people of Joplin.
Pastor Wayne’s sermon today was on discerning the will and way of God in our everyday living. Using the lessons for today he asked – What does it mean to say we are taking up the cross and following him? How do we discern if we are on God’s path with the decisions we make and in the actions we take? Pastor Wayne noted today’s lessons give us important clues for determining the accuracy of our discernment. Jeremiah’s point asks – Is the one we are listening to being obedient to God and His Word? Paul, in Romans, makes the point that the path of God sets us on a journey that will ultimately lead to eternal life.
From Matthew comes the question – Is our choice, our decision, our activity consistent with the mission of Jesus that is now our mission?
Pastor Wayne concluded that discernment of God’s presence and His will in our living has been and always will be difficult. But if we keep Jesus the Christ as our check point then discernment will come. We just need to keep praying and trusting in the Holy Spirit.
