“Take care of what God gives you the power to take care of.”  A simple sentence uttered by our preacher during the sermon.  Sometimes simple little sentences like that can just hit like a target right between the eyes.  It got me to thinking.  How many times have I passed right on by the things that God gave me the power to take care of?  In all honesty, this column is not long enough to list them all.  Probably this newspaper couldn’t provide enough space.

You see, we live in a world that is instant everything.  Information at the press of a button, drive-thrus for meals, ATMs for quick cash, mobile phones and messaging, and the list goes on.  Today’s children have come to expect this kind of availability.  And so have the ‘old fossils’ of just a few decades ago.  Yes, I’m an old fossil.

Today’s sermon centers on Luke 9:57-62 which is about people being called to carry the message of Jesus.  Jesus says, “Follow me.”  In a flash the ones being called have personal duties.  One wants to bury his father.  Another wants to go home and say goodbye.  Back then just as in the present, other things take over and become the fixation.  That’s why the sentence “Take care of what God gives you the power to take care of” hit home.  How many opportunities have I let slide?

The sermon was poignant.  Also, there was a story included about the number 86,400.  It’s an important number.  And the story that the preacher told was illuminating.

Copies of the sermon are always available and we would love to send you a CD of it.  They are free.  Call (4l7)543-6219 to get a copy.

Have a God-blessed, God-inspired, and God-filled week.
