A 30-year-old Springfield man was hospitalized with serious injuries Sunday in a one-vehicle crash south of Ava.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol said Jeremy M. Heckenlively was traveling north on Highway 5 when he fell asleep and ran his 2005 Chevrolet off the left side of the roadway.
The car struck a mailbox, impacted a culvert, overturned and struck a tree, coming to rest on its top.
Also hurt in the 6:40 p.m. wreck that occurred five miles south of Ava was passenger Tracie L. Heckenlively, 37, of Springfield. Her injuries were minor.
Both wreck victims were taken to Cox South Hospital by ambulance. Tpr. Rob Crewse who investigated the crash said neither of the individuals was wearing a seat belt.
