Homeowner Witnesses Burglary; Two Are Arrested and Charged

Jeffery Tanner

Cole Wagner

Jeffery Tanner, 19, of Ava, has been charged with a residential burglary in Douglas County. Cole Wagner, also 19, of Ava, is charged with a probation and parole violation in connection with the same incident that occurred on May 27.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Department reports that the office received a call at 10:20 a.m. that day, from a residence on County Road 102, reporting a burglary in progress.

Unknown to the burglars, Sheriff Chris Degase said, a female resident was hiding inside the residence while the burglary was taking place, and was able to give law enforcement an excellent description of one of the men.

Sheriff’s Deputy Sgt. Vernon Johnson responded to the call with Sheriff Degase. As he approached the area, Sgt. Johnson observed a white vehicle traveling west on CR 102 at a high rate of speed. Sheriff Degase initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle at the intersection of CR 102 and Highway 5 north of Ava.

Sgt. Johnson continued to the residence.

As Sheriff Degase initiated the traffic stop, he observed a male passenger throwing objects out the window. It was later determined the objects were coins stolen from the residence.

Sheriff Degase arrested both subjects in the vehicle and identified them as Tanner and Wagner.

Tanner has been charged with first degree burglary, stealing, and property damage. His bond is set at $33,500 or 10 percent cash. Wagner is being held on a probation and parole warrant pending  formal charges.

It was determined that approximately $450 in change was stolen from the residence.
