Ava R-1 School Board met for a special meeting Monday, June 6, and voted to hire OPAA Food Management to provide food service for the 2011-12 school year. The other company in the running, Fresh Ideas Food Management, who had also submitted a bid proposal for the opportunity, rescinded their bid at the last minute.
The bid from OPAA is a five-year contract that will be renewed annually.
Over the past five year, Ava Schools have lost over $36,000 annually, and according to Dr. Brian Wilson, superintendent, changing to this new food service provider promises to change that loss into an annual profit of $50,134.
Board members accepted the bid with the stipulation current cafeteria staff members will retain their job positions.
