Ava Kiwanis Club News

We weren’t planning to have a program for last week’s meeting, but we ended up with a timely one considering the devastation the tornado in Joplin has caused.

Suzanne Cooney from Douglas County Health Dept. came and shared with us concerning Disaster Preparedness, hoping to get the word out that volunteers are needed here in case of an emergency.

Volunteers must fill out an application and submit to a background check before a disaster strikes.  If you might like to volunteer, please call Suzanne at 683-4174.

Glenda brought her laptop and a DVD from Kiwanis International which is a recruitment tool for getting new members which was viewed by those present. The rest of the meeting was spent with final preparations for Peanut Day which happened on Saturday, May 28.

Working the event were Glenda and Evan Little, Connie Cornelius, Dolores Davis and Mancell and Willie Cornelison.  Appreciation to all who donated.  Please know that your donations will be used to fund projects for children in the Ava area.

So far, we have no programs scheduled for June, however, that could change at a moment’s notice. It seems there is always something for willing hands when you belong to Kiwanis Club of Ava.  On Tuesday at 1 p.m., those who are able will be working to clean out the storage unit that we have been using for several years.  By clearing it out, we will avoid that charge each month, leaving us more funds for worthy projects.  Plans are under way for the June 2nd meeting as well.

Later this month, we will be serving up funnel cakes at the Heart of the Ozarks Health Care Center’s annual fireworks event.  We will have to begin planning for that fundraiser very soon!

We have heard from Amanda Ray and received information that was needed to process her scholarship.  We are waiting to receive the needed information from our second recipient, Courtney Thompson.

If you have a program to present or an idea for one, contact Donna Dixon at 683-1918.  For all other information concerning the club, call Glenda Little at 683-6167.
