Mildred Jean Morrissey, 88

Mildred Jean Morrissey of Ava, Mo., passed away May 7, 2011 at Cox South, Springfield, Mo.

Mildred Jean was born March 30, 1923 in New Cumberland, Pa., daughter of Walter and Elizabeth Wire. She graduated from New Cumberland High School and attended local Secretarial Business School.

She is survived by her son, Patrick B. Morrissey and daughter-in-law, Jean C. Morrissey, of Ava, Mo.; and four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mildred Jean was married to Air Force Sgt. Joseph E. Morrissey in January 1943. In the course of Joseph’s military career the family was deployed to different bases throughout the United States and abroad, including extensive stays in Japan and Panama. They eventually settled in Alexandria, Va., where Joseph retired to Fort Belvoir in 1964. After the death of her husband Mildred Jean moved to Ava in 2007 to live with her son. In 2009 failing health necessitated her move to Heart of the Ozarks.

A lifelong horsewoman, she competed in English style riding meets, winning ribbons for proficiency. Fishing was another favorite pastime and hobby she enjoyed both personally and with her husband, and they spent summers surf fishing off Nags Head, N.C.

In accordance with and honoring Mildred Jean’s wishes there is no service or memorial planned.

Arrangements were under the care and direction of Ava Family Funeral Home.
