Lizetta was born Feb. 10, 1913 in Goodhope, Mo., in Douglas County, to James and Maudie (Anderson) Heard. Lizetta was the oldest daughter in a family of 10 children: five boys and five girls.
These are her own words on her childhood: “To look back on my childhood, I had a great time. We didn’t have a lot of worldly things, but plenty of love. Our home was near a clear stream, where us kids spent hours during the summer, after our chores were done. A big spring where we got water and kept our milk, butter and other things to cool. My Mom would save twine and make balls and the family would go in the meadow to play baseball. I grew up in a country school and was never tardy or missed a day. In those days our basketball court was outside. Basketball is still my favorite sport.”
Mom met her husband, our dad, Lawrence, at a basketball game. They were married on July 14, 1929. They had 58 wonderful years together when he died in 1987. They have eight children, all still living. Mom surrendered her life to the Lord in a little Baptist church in Baker, Mont., in 1956. They lived numerous places, but Baker was always the favorite place in her memories.
Mom was a gardener. She said, “if we didn’t grow it, we didn’t have it.”
She was a seamstress, made her own patterns and made most of the clothes we girls wore. She made a lot of quilts through the years. She was a natural when it came to running a household. She always knew the right words to say to her family. Mom taught Children’s Sunday School and was involved in her church. We could say so much more because she was “so much more.”
Lizetta was preceded in death by her parents, eight siblings, her husband, Lawrence, son-in-laws, Pete Peterson and Dean Gerke, daughter-in-law, Clara Roy, grandchildren, Jesse Roy, Tara Archdale and Alana Roy.
Lizetta is survived by eight children, James Elmer Roy, Lawton, Okla., Harold Roy, Las Vegas, Nev., Darrel (Kathy) Roy, Wolf Point, Mont., Beulah Peterson, Wolf Point, Mont., Vivian Gerke, Columbus, Mont., Jerry Roy, Las Vegas, Nev., Michael Roy, Harrisonville, Mo. and Sue (John) Ady, San Diego, Calif.; 114 grand-, great- and great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Wava Kelly, Lebanon, Mo.; sister-in-law, Elva Tripp, Mansfield, Mo.; brother-in-law, Harvey (Eleanor) Roy, Little Rock, Ark.; and many other relatives and friends.
