Norwood Area Gleanings

Sorry I forgot to mention the death of Eula (Hull) Miller, daughter of Jess and Violet Hull of Norwood. Eula was their third child, first was Opal (Hull) Towe, Jean (Hull) Bradshaw and the youngest was a brother, Lyle Hull, who lives south of Norwood. His parents are deceased. Eula has lived in St. Joseph for a long time. She was my student one year at Hickory Flat.

According to last week’s election our school board next year will consist of Dee Dee Richardson, Shawn Chadwell, Shanna Wilson, John Cramer, Doug Chadwell, Rhonda Coatney. The city aldermen are Don Kelly, Gary Watts, Leroy Rakestraw, and Jeff Sinning.

The Norwood High School graduating class of 1958 will meet at the school May 7 at 10 a.m. for a class reunion. They have been unable to locate Carl King. If you can inform him, please do. Don’t forget this announcement.

Linda Cottengim attended the funeral of the principal of a Marshfield school recently. The teacher was in a four-wheeler accident and was killed. She was the daughter of a Norwood graduate, Leona Shackelford who lived just off Y Hwy., north of Macomb Junction.

Linda said there were 2,500 to 3,000 people attending the service. When I was a young girl, Leona’s parents used to drive a team and wagon to our home on Sunday which was located over in Douglas County near Hickory Flat. His name was Euyless, his wife was a Calhoun, sister of Harold and nearby sisters. So sorry about the accident. She left two small children.

We hear a former Norwood resident, Jack Griffin, has a new bride. He married at West Virginia, where he now lives. His wife has two small children. Jack has a son who is a young man and lives in West Virginia and works in the coal mines there. We wish the new family much good luck and a long married life.

Bethany Holt is home from a St. Louis hospital after a long stay. We pray she’ll be doing good. She is a granddaughter of the former May Lemons of Glendale and Britany has lived in Norwood for some time.

Rev. Brandon and Christy McIntosh hosted a party for his brother Weston who is leaving for the Marines soon. His other brother Tyler is home on leave from the Marines and will go back April 27 and will be going to Afghanistan when he gets back. They had a large crowd attending the party. I believe Weston will leave May 3. We wish them well.

We were saddened by the death of Leah Ruth Felker this week. She was a former Norwood resident but had sold her farm and moved to Springfield to be near her daughters. Her funeral was held Friday at the Nazarene Church here in Norwood. She and her deceased husband Kenneth were charter members.

Velma Gray attended the senior dinner at Mountain Grove Friday and got to see and visit with many old friends.

Peyton McDaris spent Friday night with his cousin and buddy Cooper Vaughan. They had a great time. They both attend preschool at Norwood.

The Hillards that lived on PP Hwy. have left here and their place has been sold. Mr. Hillard worked for a time at the Liberty Faith School here.

The Norwood Seniors met Tuesday at the Caudle Church for their monthly dinner. There were 25 in attendance. They were Ronnie and Janet Atchison, Velma Gray, Roy Dean Gray, Linda Cottengim, Wanda Helums, Violet Hinote, Bonita Raney, Earlene Dennis, June Bradshaw, Barbara Saladin, Duane, Mary and Christian Atchison, Jr. and Alberta Steinert, Leo and Ruth Bradshaw, Leon Pendergrass, Donna Climer, Jo Ann Sanders, Jack Chadwell, Clara Morgan, Donnasue Cottengim, Delta Forrest.

We’ll probably be losing Gerald Hilt from our midst. He has his lovely home for sale. He lost his wife recently and thinks he has too much space. I told him I bet he moves to Mountain Grove. He said he wasn’t sure what he’ll do. He has a beautiful home and excellent location east of town.

J.D. Hill of California is visiting his sisters and friends here. J.D. graduated from Norwood and usually attends the yearly Alumni banquet at the school in May.

The large barn on the old Frost place south of town on PP Hwy. has been torn down. Lots of us some memories of it being a place of square dances when we were kids. They used the large loft. Delta (Snavely) Forrest lived there some as a child. She was telling me about it at the senior dinner.

Teresa Chadwell enjoyed seeing her friend and the receptionist at her work place in West Plains act in a play at West Plains Friday night. The actor has the name of Fran. Of course there were other actors but she knew Fran.

I’m looking forward for spring to come back. Wonder where she went. It’s a chilly day today.
