Ava Man Sentenced To County Jail For Driving Drunk

An Ava man’s request for a new trial was denied on April 19 and he was sentenced to serve 90 days in the county jail for driving while intoxicated.

Wright County Associate Circuit Judge Lynette Veenstra, on special assignment, heard the case here on Tuesday.

On April 1, a local jury had found John Lister, 24, guilty of DWI-first offense, and recommended a 90-day jail sentence and the assessment of a fine, according to Prosecuting Attorney Roger Wall.

In addition, Judge Veenstra also found Lister guilty of failure to affix a legal tag on his vehicle, which was the reason for the initial stop by the Highway Patrol.

After argument was made by counsel for the defendant, public defender Kevin Babcock, and counsel for the state, Prosecutor Wall, the court announced that it would follow the jury’s recommendation and sentenced Lister to 90 days in jail and assessed a fine of $100 in addition to all court costs to include the special costs of juror participation.
