Ava Kiwanis Club News

Last week’s meeting was a very busy one with so much to discuss there was very little time for visiting.  Highlighting the meeting we choose the scholarship recipients and held our annual club election.  All officers were retained in their current positions: Glenda Little, president, Diane Taylor, vice president and Donna Dixon, secretary/treasurer.

On Friday, Glenda and Donna were at the “Go Blue” Festivities at 2 p.m. on the square in recognition of Child Abuse Awareness.

Suzanne Cooney, Douglas County Health Department employee, coordinated the event.

A representative of Highway Patrol, Cpl., Brian Thompson, and the Sheriff’s Office, Sgt. Vernon Johnson, were on hand to speak with the children, who had walked to the square with their teachers in the cold wind, about child abuse.

Signs have been placed at all intersections coming onto the square, the gazebo is decorated in blue and the children “planted” blue pinwheels in the grassy areas to remind us to help stop child abuse. It was a very good program.  Great job, Suzanne, and any others who may have contributed!

On Saturday afternoon, Donna and Glenda represented Kiwanis at the City Easter Celebration.  That event was planned by Sherry Wallace, parks director.  Egg hunts for the children as well as music by area youth group bands and activities from Ava Playground committee highlighted the late afternoon.

This week will be a little less busy with Kiwanis activities.  On Monday April 18, we will recognize Terrific Kids at Skyline School at 10:45 and at Plainview School at 2 p.m., and we will have our regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday at noon at Highway House.  Next Thursday, April 28, we will be hosting “Citizens of the Month and we always look forward to that meeting.

We are planning our “Skip A Meal” activities for the last full week in April, and getting a speaker for Kiwanis Prayer Week which is the first week in May. Very soon, we will be handing out peanuts for our annual Peanut Day Fundraiser.

If you have a program to present, or an idea you think would be of interest, contact Donna Dixon at 683-1918.  For all other questions concerning our club or activities, contact Glenda Little at 683-6167.
