Baseball Bears Beat Spfld. Central & Hollister; Lose to West Plains Zizzers

The Ava High School Bears won baseball games with Hollister and Springfield Central during the past week, and lost a game to West Plains.

On Wednesday, the Bears were playing Salem in a conference game that was rained out here on Monday.

On March 29, the Bears lost an 8-4 decision to the West Plains Zizzers on the home field.

The Bears scattered only four hits in the game, including two by Taylor Coonts in three trips to the plate.

Coonts scored one of Ava’s four runs and also drove in a run.

Garrett Baird and Zach Leonard each had an RBI, and Baird, Ben Loge and Austin Gastineau also crossed the plate for Ava.

Trae Shelton pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up seven hits and six runs, while striking out three West Plains batters.

Loge pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing two runs and striking out two batters.

On March 30, Ava hosted Hollister and came away with a 4-3 win.

Kody Kutz pitched four innings, striking out seven and allowing one hit and two runs.

Cody Wallace pitched one inning and Jesse Johnson pitched two innings for Ava, striking out three Hollister batters.

Ava had only three hits in the game, but had six batters reach base on walks, with Kutz walking three times.

After being rained out on Monday, the Bears took the field Tuesday against Springfield Central and won 16-6 in five innings.

Ava pounded out 12 hits and had eight batters reach base on walks. Kutz walked on each of four trips to the plate.

Austin Casey was 4-for-4 with four runs batted in and two runs scored. Loge was 2-for-4 with a double and triple, and Coonts was two-for-four with a double.

Kutz pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed four runs. Jesse Johnson pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing one hit and no runs, and Cody Wallace pitched one inning, giving up two hits and two runs.

The Bears will have Cabool here today in a 4:30 start, and the junior varsity Bears will play in a JV tournament at Houston on Saturday.

Next week the Bears will travel to Mtn. View Liberty for a conference game on Monday and will have a non-conference game at Seymour on Tuesday. On Thursday next week the Bears will go to Mtn. Grove for another conference game.
