Ava Students Take 3rd in SCA Math and Science Relays

A total of 28 math and science students recently traveled to Salem high school to compete in the annual SCA Math and Science Relays.

Ava students competed in contests ranging from physical science to calculus.  Each category had 32 students competing and any student scoring in the top 10 in each event earned points towards the Ava total.

Several students earned individual medals and as a team Ava students brought home 3rd place.

Earning points for Ava were Algebra I: Brecken Lewis, 2nd.  Algebra I:  Dakotah Moree, 7th and Kurdt Foy, 9th.  Chemistry I:  Jimmy Roffman, 3rd, and Hannah Dudley, 9th.  Biology II:  Johnnie Carl, 4th, and Nikki Rieken, 10th.  Biology I:  Brecken Lewis, 3rd.  Physics: Carol Williams, 10th.  Measurements:  Jesse Groth, 2nd and Kymber Koop, 3rd.  Physical Science: Elizabeth Ferguson, 1st, Emily Armour, 2nd, and Bailey Lee, 9th.  Trigonometry:  Nikki Rieken, 2nd, and Jeff Smalley, 3rd.  Chemistry II: Cody Gast, 10th.  Geometry:  Elizabeth Ferguson, 5th.

Ava’s 9th grade team earned 1st place gold medals. The team included Austin Giorgianni, Emily Armour, Elizabeth Ferguson and Dakotah Moree.

The 10th grade team earned 4th place with members Jimmy Roffmann, Hannah Dudley, Jeremy Duncan and Bailey Lee.

Sponsor Mr. Jeff Tabor was very pleased with the science students. “Our kids competed great,” he said. “They made Ava look good! Some kids stepped up at the last minute and took some extra tests. I am really proud of them.”

Sponsor Mrs. Michell King also noted that this was the best finish for Ava in several years.  “What a fantastic bunch of kids.  We had a lot of fun with them, and it was great to see them so excited for each other every time they read an Ava name at the awards assembly.  And that happened a lot!”
