On this 8th Sunday after Epiphany we began with the Bible readings as follows: Isaiah 49:8-16a, Psalm 131, the New Testament: 1 Corinthians 4:1-5, Gospel: Matthew 6:24-34.
Our lector was Jerry Johnson.
Pastor Wayne Strohschein’s sermon today was based on the lesson from Matthew 6:24-34 where Jesus tells us, “Don’t worry.” It seems part of our nature to worry. After all, we say, look at what is going on around the world, in our nation, in my neighborhood, and in my life.
So, how can we say, “Don’t worry?”
We wrestle with this text until we realize he is reminding us we need to focus on our relationship with him. If we do we know the one God who has already taken care of what matters, our salvation that gives us eternal life. Tomorrow will come and it is not in our hands. It is God’s hands. In the scheme of things, what else is there to worry about if this is taken care of? That is the nature of his gift of faith and peace.
