Highway Patrol, Ava Police Work Wrecks This Week

A vehicle stopped in traffic waiting to make a left turn was rear-ended on Highway 5 north of Ava last Friday night.

Neither driver was seriously injured, but a passenger in one car was taken to the hospital by Cox Ambulance-Ava, with moderate injuries.

Trooper Ronny Mast of the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that a 2006 Ford driven by Donald J. Hanger, 37, of Ava, was northbound on Highway 5 and was stopped to make a left turn onto Route B at 8:58 p.m.

Another northbound vehicle, a 1994 Jeep, driven by Amy C. Burchell, 21, of Ava, came up behind the stopped car and struck the Hanger vehicle in the rear.

A passenger in Burchell’s car, Crystal Phillips, 20, of Ava, was taken to Cox South Hospital in Springfield by ambulance.

All occupants of the vehicles were wearing seatbelts, according to the Patrol report.

Two occupants of a motorcycle suffered scrapes and cuts Sunday afternoon when their machine was struck by a car on East Washington Ave., in Ava.

Ava Policeman Charles Bunch reported that the Honda motorcycle was operated by Russell Curtis, 34, Ava, and was struck by a passenger car driven by Christina L. Dewitt-Midcat, 44, also of Ava.

Curtis, and a boy passenger whose name was not given on the police report, were both treated at the scene by paramedics with Cox Ambulance-Ava, but neither was transported by ambulance.

The driver of the car was not hurt.

The collision occurred at the intersection of NE 5th St. next to the Casey’s General Store.

Officer Bunch was assisted at the scene by Policeman Brenda Dinwiddie and personnel with Ava Fire and Rescue.

The crash occurred at 2:54 p.m. Sunday.
