Dr. Norman C. Estes, of Peoria, Illinois, has been named to the Best Doctors List in America for 2011-12.
Dr. Estes is a professor and chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria (UICOMP).
Estes has directed UICOMP’s Department of Surgery since 1998.
A native of Douglas County, Norman Estes was born to Elsie (Spurlock) and Cleon Estes in Squires. He moved with his family to Abeline, Kansas where he lived during his youth and graduated high school there.
Dr. Estes has many family ties to Douglas County –– his grandparents were Fida (Dobyns) and Newt Estes from the Vanzant area; and Addie (Kennedy) and Charlie Spurlock from Squires. Dr. Estes still owns the family home in Squires where he can spend weekends and enjoy time with family and friends.
Dr. Estes and his wife have three children, Dr. Melissa Estes-Huggins, Dane Estes and Matthew Estes. The couple also has two granddaughters.
Estes received a medical degree from the University of Kansas in 1971, and he finished his residency in general surgery at University of Kansas Medical Center.
Dr. Estes was in private practice and assistant professor of surgery at the University of Kentucky from 1976-78. He also served as part-time attending surgeon at the University of Missouri-Kansas City from 1978 to 1981. From 1981-84, he was an associate professor of surgery at Indiana University in Indianapolis.
In 1984, Estes returned to the University of Kansas as professor of surgery, and served as Chief of Staff at University of Kansas Medical Center from 1992 until his present appoint at UICOMP in 1998.
Dr. Estes is certified by the American Board of Surgery. He is current co-chair of the Illinois State Commission on Cancer, and has published articles on surgical oncology. His research has focused on tumor proliferation and nutrition, as well as clinical studies in breast and gastrointestinal malignancies.
