Two guests attended the Lion’s meeting of the evening of Feb. 21. One guest was Preston Brooks who is a friend of Lion John Weisbrod. The other guest was Jessica Jenkins who has headed up the Ava Community Playground Project.
She explained that about 1500 volunteers are needed to help with the playground. A volunteer will not have to have construction experience or specialized skills. There are various committees that anyone can volunteer for.
As well as volunteers, they need the assistance of major corporate sponsors. Fundraising began in January 2011. This playground will be fenced in and designed for children of all ages. There is an anticipated date of completion by mid-fall 2011. More information can be found, at avaplayground@live.com, or by calling 417-343-5703.
The Lions have already received approximately 20 registration forms from anxious participants who will be in the walk/run in May. Registration forms can be found in various businesses in the area. A $10 fee is required to register, plus one can of food to be donated to the Food Harvest.
Feb. 14 Meeting
Monday evening the Ava Lions Club had a recognition meeting for several members.
Lion President Larry Morrison received a pin for membership excellence. Other members recognized and receiving pins included Jim Norman for 30 years of membership in the Lions Club, Rev. Bob Crofton for 20 years membership, Lion John Rule for 15 years, Charles and Evelyn Cantwell for 5 years, Molly and Ernie Buterbaugh for 5 years, and Danny and Charlene Letsinger recieved a pin in recognition for their years of membership and service in the Lion’s Club.
Two new members, Larry Crouch and Doris Haynes, were installed in the Lion’s Club. The Lions hope they will enjoy many years of being members and doing service.
The Lions are getting a good head start on their plans for the annual walk/run. They need sponsors for this event, which is in May. Applications will be distributed throughout the area at various businesses. As before, there will be a $10 registration fee.
