The Ava junior varsity boys’ basketball team concluded the 2010-11 season with two wins this week.
On Friday night the JV Bears defeated Houston, 64-32, with four players scoring in double figures.
Dexter Fish led the attack with 14 points. Kody Kutz added 13, and Chase Dixon and Ben Loge had 10 each.
Ava jumped on Houston early and never looked back. Kutz knocked down three 3-point shots and Dixon hit two from behind the arc.
Ava’s press created a lot of easy baskets for the Bears. After one half of play, the Bears led 43-17.
“Our bench did a great job in the second half,” Coach Nathan Houk said, “only allowing 15 points and scoring 21 points.”
Houk commented that the team had a good balance of inside and outside scoring for the entire game.
Others scoring for Ava were Brandon Guengerich 4, Caleb Miles 4, Austin Casey 3, Phillip Eubanks 3 and Kevin Philpott 2.
The JV Bears wrapped up their season Tuesday night with a 57-25 win over Forsyth.
Ava held a 30-17 lead at halftime despite what Coach Houk observed as a lack of intensity on defense. “I felt like we were playing just good enough to win,” he said.
The Bears picked up the pace in the third period, outscoring Forsyth 20-8 in the third period and held the Panthers scoreless in the fourth.
Fish, Miles, and Chris and Tyler Cox all did a great job on the boards.
Although no one scored in double figures, 10 different players scored for Ava.
Loge, Casey and Miles had 8 points each, Fish and Jesse Johnson added 7, Dixon, scored 6, Tyler Cox 5, Kutz 4, Chris Cox 2 and Philpott 1.
Ava finished the year 11-7 overall, going 3-3 in the conference.
Coach Houk complimented the players for their hard work. “I really enjoyed the opportunity to coach them,” he said. “I look forward to next season.”
Coach Houk also expressed appreciation to the parents of the players for their help, time and support.
“They are raising some fine boys,” he said.
