Lady Bears Win 3 Games This Week; Are 19-5 Overall

The Ava Lady Bears improved their overall record to 19-5 this week and are sitting at 6-0 in conference play.

On Monday night the Ava girls traveled to Thayer and picked up a 59-51 win in SCA play.

Jorie Garrett led all scorers with 29 points and Payton Lakey added 16 points with seven assists.

Lakin Martin had 23 points for Thayer.

Ava led Thayer 39-30 at halftime and held off a fourth quarter charge by the Lady Bobcats to take the win.

Others scoring for Ava were Meilissa Coonts 7, Kristen Hastings 3, Emily Sterling 2, and Abbie Lansdown 2.

Ava hosted Conway in a make-up game Tuesday night and came away with a 60-53 win in non-conference action.

Lakey led the Lady Bears with 21 points and Garrett added 15 points and 11 rebounds. Coonts had 11 points for Ava.

Also scoring for the Lady Bears were Bethany Horn 8, Lansdown 2 and Hastings 1.

Last Friday night the Ava girls traveled to Blue Eye and came away with a 51-47 overtime win.

Lakey led with 19 points and Horn had 11 for Ava.

Ava led the Lady Bulldogs 23-15 at the half, but Blue Eye came back to tie the game at 41-all at the end of regulation.

Ava hit 8-of-10 free throws in the overtime period to claim the win.

Kayla Hickey had 17 points for Blue Eye.

Ava junior varsity defeated Norwood, 33-27, on Feb. 7 behind 15 points from Hannah Johnson and 10 from Cori Dry.

On Feb. 11, the JV Lady Bears fell to Blue Eye 41-33. Johnson again led the Lady Bears with 15 points.

On Feb. 14, the junior varsity girls traveled to Thayer and defeated the Lady Bobcats 41-28. Johnson had 17 points, Dry 10, and Bailey Lee 8.

On Tuesday night, the junior varsity Lady Bears took Conway to overtime and won, 49-45.

Again Johnson led the team with 16 point. Lee scored 9, Erica Croney 8 and Mikali Elliott 7.

Conway’s Mardya White had 22 of their 45 points.

The Lady Bears will play Houston here tonight to wrap up the SCA schedule. It will also be Senior Night for the Ava girls as they play their final home game of the season.

The senior players will be recognized between the junior varsity and varsity contests.

Ava girls will wrap up their regular season at Morrisville Monday before beginning district tournament play at Cabool on Saturday, Feb. 26.

The district tournament will be seeded this Friday.
