Firemen from three departments battled a house fire throughout the day Tuesday in Ava that, despite their efforts, would ultimately destroy the home.
The Ava City Fire Department received the fire call just after 10 a.m. Tuesday. When they arrived on scene, at 600 NW 4th St., smoke was showing in the garage on the front side of the home and flames were seen at the back of the house.
Firemen attempted to extinguish the flames, but found areas of the house inaccessible.
It was determined that the fire most likely started in the basement and firemen were unable to enter the structure to attack the blaze due to possible floor collapse.
When it became apparent that the fire could not be extinguished quickly by an inside attack, mutual aid was requested from Ava Rural and Goodhope fire departments. Firemen battled the fire until after 7 p.m.
The Ava City Fire Department was also called to a fire Sunday afternoon that destroyed an outbuilding at the Matt Deaver residence on NW 4th Street, near the Ava Post Office.
That shed was totally engulfed in fire when firemen arrived and was a total loss.
