We all know how popular Ava Drug’s nickel ice cream is locally, but the local store’s fame has also earned story of the year honors for 2010 by a national broadcaster.
Andrew McCrea, public broadcaster and motivational speaker, travels across the United States seeking and recording stories of local interest for his radio broadcast, American Countryside.
It wa local author, Laura Ingalls Wilder, that first attracted his attention. The interview with curator Jean Coday, of Mansfield, led to a meeting with Kathy Short and Ann Duckworth at Ava Drug regarding the story of Carl Mays, major league pitcher from this area.
However, it was his nickel coke and the 1950s nostalgia of the soda fountain that intrigued McCrea.
Naturally, an interview with David Norman resulted.

You can also listen to his daily broadcasts locally on Ava radio station KKOZ.
