It’s important to make a living. Anyone trying to carve a place first concentrates on food and clothing. The challenge to have both is attacked with sincerity. But, it says in Matthew 6:25-32 not to worry about food or clothing. God takes care of those things. After all, isn’t He the one who causes us to grow? We haven’t the power to make ourselves taller.
So what is important? It says in the first part of Matthew 16:25 that those who try to save their lives will die. That means spending time keeping alive only results in death, which is true. The cemeteries are proof of that. If one dwells on the things of this world then, like Solomon said, it’s in vain and a vexation of the spirit (Ecclesiastes 1:14).
Spirit is a word that some refer to as the essence of a human being. St. Thomas in his writings said that man’s spirit is what draws him to God. It’s a desire to be closer to our Creator. That is the reason for Matthew 6:33. Seek God and his kingdom first and everything else is added. Solomon’s book of Ecclesiastes proves this point.
In chapter 8, verse 17 Solomon with all of his wisdom admitted that everything he had added to himself did not help him. He was still going to die. Everything he had done would rot and decay. It, too, would pass away. So what’s left? It’s in the last two verses of the book of Ecclesiastes. Fear God and keep his commandments. The Bible is there to be used. Jeremiah 29:13 says it all.
