Jack and Sally Sorensen of South Sioux City, South Dakota came to Ava, Friday for a visit with Bob and Darlene Sorensen, Luke, and Sally. They attended church at Bethany Baptist Church, Sunday morning and returned home Sunday afternoon.
Norma Stillings sang a special song in the morning service. Pastor Bob Sorensen brought a message from Isaiah 9:6 he called, “What Shall Be His Name?”
Isaiah was given more information describing the coming of the Messiah than any other prophet. Isaiah 9:6 says, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Councilor, The mighty God, The everlasting father, The Prince of Peace.”
“And his name shall be called Wonderful.” It is truly a wonderful thing that a virgin should conceive a son, “Immanuel,” which means “God with us.” It is a wonderful thing that God should have become flesh so that he could walk among us. The creation of the heavens and the earth, the sun and all the stars, the human body, and everything that exists is a wonder beyond our thinking. Jesus is wonderful in that he can save a wicked person and give him power to overcome sin.
Jesus is “Councilor.” People came to him for the answers to the questions of the ages. Wise men from the east sought him at his birth. Jesus astounded the doctors in the temple at Jerusalem when he was only twelve. Jesus was able to communicate God’s love to all classes of people by healing the sick, raising the dead, touching the leper, and giving sight to the blind. All his teachings are good counsel, never to fail.
Jesus is “The mighty God.” He has fought and won the great battle for our souls. He fought that battle all alone on the cross with all our sins laid upon him. He was victorious, death was defeated, and he received the keys to death and hell. The victory was sure when he arose from the dead to live forever more.
Jesus is “The everlasting Father.” He is the Alpha and Omega. His Holy Spirit resides in his believers now and for eternity.
Jesus is “The Prince of Peace.” He is coming and when he comes he will bring everlasting peace. Lasting peace will not come by military force, by treaties, leagues, or by elections. Lasting peace will come when the world confesses that Jesus is Lord. Jesus is the present Prince of Peace for those who have believed upon him. He gives us peace in the midst of the storms of life. We can have peace knowing that Jesus will do what he has said he will do. Do you know this man, Jesus?
Dan Stillings sang a special song in the evening service. Pastor Sorensen brought a message on baptism. Four persons were baptized after the service. Darlene Sorensen sang a special song before the baptismal service that evening.
