The Ava Community Playground Project was selected as a finalist of the Pepsi Refresh Grant, with the opportunity to win a $250,000 grant.
The grant winner is chosen based on the number of votes each project receives.
Through a “grassroots” effort, the citizens of Ava are joining hands to provide a state-of-the-art playground not only for the children of Ava but for children throughout the area.
The playground is designed by the children, and the entire community will help with the fundraising and supply the labor to build the playground over the next year.
Organizers are working with Leathers and Associates, a design firm, that specializes in custom-design community-built projects.
Citizens can vote for the project by texting “103398” to the number 73774.

Each cell phone number and e-mail address may vote one time per day.
The voting ends Oct. 31.
Organizers say that the playground project went from the 250th place to the 140th place in a matter of 24 hours.
As of press time on Wednesday, the project was in 31st place.
