‘For every action there is a reaction.’ Most everyone has heard the quote or something like it. It’s not exactly quoted here but the meaning remains the same. Isaac Newton, who believed that God was the master creator, coined the quote. He is thought to be the greatest genius of all time and a name that most people know.
John the Baptist is another well-known name. In John 1:19 he is asked who he is. Many believed he was the Christ of prophecy or a prophet. His reaction was that he was the voice making the way for the Lord (v. 23)
Anthony deMello, a famous Jesuit priest, said that the human heart longs for truth but that, when he finds it, the first reaction is hostility. In John 14:6 Jesus confirms that he is the way, the truth, and the life. The reaction is severe. A whiplash of fury brings about the crucifixion (John 19:18).
Then there’s E. Stanley Jones, a great missionary who was in India during the time of Gandhi and ultimately wrote a biography of him that influenced Martin Luther King. Jones said that when the depths are upheld by the Holy Spirit, the reaction is Christian (when the Holy Spirit is allowed to work in us, the result is Christian). John 1: 15, 32 & 34 tells that John the Baptist ‘bare record’. It’s a wonderful testimony that Christians are to ‘bare record’. After all, folks have a God-sized hole in their hearts that only He can fill. Just look at the people mentioned here and the record they left.
