Darlene Sorensen sang a song in the morning service that was a tribute to godly fathers. The fathers who were present in the morning service were honored with a gift. The fathers honored Pastor Sorensen with a gift. The Youth Choir sang a tribute to fathers, “ The Steps of a Good Man,” in the evening service.
Pastor Bob Sorensen brought a message he called, “Fathers, the Glory of Children,” from Proverbs 17:6.
A father that desires to be the glory of his children should first of all be a Christian. His faith and trust in God will show up in how he behaves at home, in how he treats their mother, and in all his dealings. He will be courageous, will demonstrate integrity, will have strong convictions and live up to them, and he will live a clean life. Something happens when children see their father do something he should not do.
Children will glory in the father who has taken the God given responsibility to be the leader in the home. He can say with confidence, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” He will see that the scriptures are read and prayer is made daily. Ideally his wife will be an encourager and he will not fear that his wife will usurp his authority. He stands up for the ways of God and his children will know what he believes.
Children will glory in the love their father shows for their mother and for them. A man does not always have to show how tough he is. A strong man can show compassion and tenderness. A man is commanded to love his wife. She is commanded to reverence him. The children are commanded to be obedient to their parents. All this is made easier when the father is actually in the home spending time with his family. He makes it known that he enjoys being with his wife and family.
Children will glory in a father that is loyal. He is loyal to his family, to his wife, and to his church. He avoids temptations and knows that he must stand before God to give an account for the way his family turns out.
The home is under attack. It is made up of human beings and human beings are not perfect. But the father who admits his sins and errors and goes to the Lord for forgiveness and cleansing has the promise that God will be with him. God will give him the grace to raise his family according to God’s perfect plan.
