On this 15th Sunday after Pentecost we started our service with the Bible readings. They are as follows: Deuteronomy 30:15-20, Psalm 1 and the New Testament Philemon 1:21. Our lector was Carroll Rutledge.
Pastor Wayne Strohschein’s sermon was on the Gospel Luke 14:25 – 33. “Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple there for none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all of your possessions.” In this season of Pentecost, God has come near to us and we have to make choices.
We had a potluck luncheon and a special cake for Caleb and Joshua Johnson for their first Holy Communion.
A report was given to the congregation by Pastor Wayne Strohschein and his wife Karen, and Jean and Carroll Rutledge who attended the CORE meeting in Ohio as follows:
Lutherans gathered at Grove City, Ohio on Aug. 26 and 27 to form a new Lutheran church body. Trinity sent four delegates. Representatives from several church denominations attended, offering their support, including four bishops from the Lutheran African churches, the Anglican Church, the Catholic Church, Lutherans from Canada and South America.
Pastor Paull Spring, leader of the CORE steering committee and a former bishop of the Pennsylvania Synod of the ELCA was elected as the new bishop for the North American Lutheran Church (NALC) as delegates voted on a provisional constitution, elected officers, and set up a budget for 2011.
Trinity Lutheran Church of Ava will be a charter member of this new denomination.
The North American Lutheran Church will utilize networked ministries of local congregations and parachurch organizations, rather than one large bureaucracy of a denominational body. It will be governed by convocation of representative delegates from the congregations and will submit major decisions to the congregations for ratification. The CORE and NALC will be centered on four attributes: Christ-centered, mission-driven, traditionally-grounded and congregationally-focused.
Then in two weeks, Sept. 19, Trinity Lutheran Church will take another vote to leave ELCA and to join another Lutheran Church body.
Monday at 5 p.m. at the church the Sunshine Singers will meet.
Naomi’s Circle will meet for a workday on Wednesday, 9:30 a.m.
Remember game night every first and third Friday evening at 7 p.m. Please mark your calendars.
We wish to welcome all visitors and the new members that have joined us.
Please come join us Sundays, as we have Bible study at 9:30 a.m. and the church service at 10:45 a.m.
Communion is the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month and potluck luncheons are on the 1st and 3rd Sundays after the service.
