Two AHS Students Make The Macy’s Great American Marching Band

Two Ava High School students will have the opportunity to perform in the Macy’s Great American Marching Band.

Rebecca Shields and Sarah Copeland both auditioned, and received a spot, in the flag corps of the parade.

Honoring America’s finest high school musicians, the Macy’s Great American Marching Band will be comprised of select students from each of the fifty states.

Two of these students are from Ava High School.

Approximately 50 flags and dancers will complement the 185 musicians.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is internationally recognized as the official start of the holiday season and world-famous as a uniquely American entertainment extravaganza.

Stepping-off from Central Park, the band will be cheered by the 2.5 million spectators lining the parade route.

Arriving at Macy’s Herald Square, the band will perform for celebrity hosts, a grandstand audience, and more than 50 million TV viewers watching the broadcast live on NBC.

All students interested in being part of this prestigious event submitted an audition.

Students were asked to record themselves demonstrating the requirements based on what part they are auditioning for instrumentalist, flag, or dance.

The two students from Ava High School, Rebecca Shields and Sarah Copeland, auditioned on flag.

They were required to demonstrate flag fundamentals, a flag routine, marching, and other marching band needs.

Based upon their audition they were selected to be two of the few students from the state of Missouri to be a part of the Great American Marching band.

These students will be traveling to New York City November 19-26.

They will learn their routine for the parade as well as get to view the city.

On Thanksgiving Day, November 25, they will take to the parade route with pride as part of the flag line.

Unfortunately, the cost of being a member of the band is expensive.

Each student has to pay $1,389.00 plus the cost of transportation to and from New York City.

With the current state of economy covering these expenses can be a daunting task for anyone.

If anyone is interested in donating money to help these students be a part of this amazing opportunity please send the donation to Sarah Sacco at Ava High School.

Checks may be made out to the Ava Band Boosters.

If you would like the donation to be split between both girls or go to one specific girl, please specify this on the donation.
