Lady Bears Win First Volleyball Match of Season

The Ava Lady Bears won their first volleyball match at home against Springfield Catholic in the season opener Tuesday night.

The VolleyBears won the first set 25-20, lost the second set 21-25 but then sealed the victory in the final set 25-16 for the first win of the season.

Coach Sarah Lemmons said the night was a huge success for returning seniors Abby Dean, Samantha Martin, Emily Petty, Lindsey Armour and Kristen Hastings who each contributed to the team win with their “never give up attitudes.”

Emily Petty led the team in assists with 28 and also had two ace serves.  Jorie Garrett led the team with 13 kills, and Bethany Horn added to the win with six kills of her own.

Emily Sterling had a huge serving game for the team at 19-for-20 with six aces.

The JV and freshmen volleyball teams didn’t fare as well as the varsity team, both losing to the Fightin’ Irish.

The freshmen lost in two sets 22-25 and 21-25. The JV lost a tough three-set match.  They fell to the Irish 7-25 the first set but came back with a win 25-22 in the second set, only to lose the deciding set, 13-25.

The Lady Bears take to the road  tonight (Thursday) to take on Spokane for another round of matches starting with the freshman game at 5 o’clock, followed by the JV and varsity games.
