Football Bears Open Season At Home This Friday Night First Volleyball Games Here Tuesday

The Ava High School Bears will open the 2010 football season at home this Friday night against Strafford.

Coach Dan Swofford says four potential starters will be on the bench when Friday’s game begins, and he expects a real challenge from non-conference Stafford, which is a big Class 2 school.

“We’ve got to contain their quarterback,” said Swofford, who was not overly impressed with the showing made by his squad at the jamboree a week ago at Pierce City nor at the scrimmage at home a week prior to that.

Next Friday night the Bears will begin their conference schedule by traveling to Willow Springs.

All varsity football games begin at 7 p.m.

The Ava softball team opened season this week, picking up wins on Monday and Tuesday.

The volleyball teams will open at home next Tuesday, Aug. 31, hosting Springfield Catholic in 9th grade, junior varsity and varsity action. The first games will begin at 5 p.m.

Ava High School has been notified that several games will be telecast on Internet TV this year, through SCM-TV. These games will be telecast live but will only be available online through springfieldwebtv.com.

The Strafford game Friday night will be the first to be aired.

The Douglas County Herald plans to keep fans updated during the football game Friday night on the Herald’s website, douglascountyherald.com.
