Except for a brief interval from 1965-1970, when her sister Hazel wrote the column, Veda Bushong has been submitting items to the Herald for approximately 43 years.
A Douglas County native, Veda has lived in this area most of her life, except for a few years when she lived in Illinois.
For many years Veda and her husband lived in a house they built on Highway 95 in Douglas County, southeast of Ava. Her sister, who lived nearby in Ozark County, was only 2-3 miles down the road.
After her husband died in 1981, Veda sold the home, and the place is now The Yellow Rose.
As a correspondent, Veda enjoys writing about her family and the social news from the County Line area. She says the column keeps her in touch with friends from the “old neighborhood”. However, she has found that her column is also a good way to communicate with other family members who live outside of this area.
For Veda, the column is a nice way to stay connected. Many times when she runs into friends they will say “we keep up with you through the newspaper”.
