Letter to the Editor 7/23/10

Dear Editor,

I was delighted last week to meet a candidate for the United States Congress at the Ava square.  I was impressed that a congressional candidate would take time to visit Ava.  There was a good showing of the local citizens, and people were able to have a one-on-one conversation expressing their opinions with the candidate.  His message was quite clear – either one agrees with it or not.  The candidate was gracious and accommodating while answering questions and explaining his position.

What has made America great is the involvement of its citizens in their own self-government.  That’s why the Constitution begins with the words, “We the People.”  It encouraged me to see so many individuals at the Ava square caring about decisions in our government. Our government works only when a lot of people take time to get involved by researching candidates and policies.   Freedom is secured by actions.  I encourage everyone to become informed and vote both in the primary election this August 3rd, and in the general election.

Thank you,

Miriam McElvain
