Richelle Pettit Attends Missouri Girls State

Richelle Pettit, a candidate from Ava High School, attended Missouri Girls State at Central Missouri University in Warrensburg, the week of June 20 to June 25.

Richelle is the daughter of Bruce and Pam Pettit, of Ava.

Girls State is a program sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary providing young women the chance to experience how our government works. They learn from the ground up how to file for office and have their name placed on the ballot to the final voting.

Offices that can be filled are offices in a city, county and state. These offices are filled early so the girls get a chance to hold that office and run their cities and counties. They can also be members of the Highway Patrol and get a chance to “write tickets” and send offenders to court.

On the last night of the program the governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state and others are presented and are sworn into office.

These girls also take their choice of classes. They can also be in the chorus, play in the band and take part in many sport activities. They can also be a part of the talent show on Thursday night.

Miss Pettit got a chance be in the talent show and to run for several offices.

She enjoyed her time and plans to join the American Legion Auxiliary as a Junior member, and the Auxiliary indicated they would be glad to have her as a member.
