Sonya Kay Hesterly, 56


The joy of her life was family and grandchildren Sonya Kay Coombes Hesterly, 56 years, passed to heaven on Feb. 10, 2009 at her home in Mansfield, Mo.

Sonya was born Dec. 11, 1952 in Chandler, Okla., to Harold and Violet (Charmasson) Coombes. She graduated from Ava High School.

Sonya and Larry Hesterly were united in marriage on Dec. 31, 1970 in her parents’ home, in Ava, and to this union two children were born.

Sonya was a member of the Mansfield First Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher for many years, sang in the church choir, and was active in their missionary programs. Sonya was an avid cross-stitcher, loved to travel, and had recently taken up scrapbooking. She worked for many years as an office manager.

The joy of her life was her family and her four grandchildren.

Sonya was preceded in death by her parents, Harold H. Coombes and Violet “Vi” Louise (Charmasson) Woods; her dad, Bob Woods; a brother, Jim Coombes; and a brother-in-law, Ronny Durham.

Sonya is survived by husband, Larry Hesterly, Mansfield, Mo.; two children and their spouses, Scott and Mindy Hesterly, Republic, Mo., and Shelby and Chris Jenkins, Grand Rapids, Mich.; four grandchildren, Gavynn Rae and Riley Cole Hesterly, and Seth Preston and Noah Bradley Jenkins; two sisters, Patti Durham Culbreth and husband, Cecil, and Brenda Garrett and husband, Rod, all of Springfield, Mo.; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, great aunts and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Sonya were Friday, Feb. 13, at 2 p.m. in the Mansfield First Baptist Church with burial in the Ava Cemetery. Visitation was Thursday, Feb. 12, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava. Officiating was Pastor Richard Eakins.
