Jasper C. Nelson, 72


He enjoyed baseball, cards, eating with family and friends Jasper Clifton “J.C.” Nelson, of Oldfield, Mo., passed away Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009. He was born Feb. 5, 1936 at Ongo, Mo., the son of Leo and Bertie Nelson.

On June 13, 1959 he and Mildred Ilene “Pat” (Shortt) Nelson were married. They had lived in the Highlonesome community on their farm since 1961. There they raised seven children and attended church at Eastern Gate.

Jasper enjoyed baseball, playing cards, visiting and eating Sunday dinners with his family and friends. He also enjoyed bluegrass and gospel music.

Survivors include his seven children, Douglas Nelson and wife Nancy, of Oldfield, Jackie Nelson of Sparta, Mo., Alvin Nelson and wife Linda of Ava, Peggy Hampton and husband Marvin of Ava, Teena Johnson and husband Cliff of Ava, Eric Nelson and wife Patricia of Ava, Virginia Hampton and husband Tom of Ava. Jasper also has 22 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by four sisters, Kathleen Shortt, Kathern Caudill, Kay and husband Paul Goodwin, Barbara and husband Eddie Mitchell; three brothers, Jerry Nelson, Dewey Nelson and wife Millie, Jim Nelson and wife Bonnie; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred, his parents, Leo and Bertie Nelson, his father-in-law and mother-in-law Everett and Artie Shortt, a brother, Leo Nelson, Jr, a great-grandson, Michael Nelson, a brother-in-law, Darrell Shortt, and two sisters-in-law, Bonita Nelson and Luann Lea.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, in Adams Funeral Home, Ozark, with Pastor James Orick and Pastor Joe Lafferty officiating. Burial followed in Harville Cemetery.

Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
