Sam Phillips, 91


A resident of Ava since 1979, he enjoyed fishing and sports Sam Phillips, son of David and Anna (Easton) Phillips was born on Sept. 30, 1917, in Pleasant Hope, Mo., and passed away on Oct. 12, 2008, in Strafford, Mo., at the age of 91.

Sam has been a resident of Ava since 1979 after moving here from Rochelle, Ill. On Oct. 15, 1941, Sam and Dortha May (Dougherty) were united in marriage. Three children were born to this union, Diana (Phillips) Bingham, Charolett Phillips, and Sammy Phillips. Sam retired from Del Monte Foods. Sam was a deacon for the Happy Home Church and enjoyed church singings and singing church specials. He also enjoyed fishing, sports and card games.

Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Dortha May (Dougherty) Phillips; his parents; two sisters, Margaret Phillips and Hazel Phillips; four brothers, Tom Phillips, Bob Phillips, Jess Phillips, and Jack Phillips; his daughter, Charolett; three of his grandchildren; and one son-in-law, Harry Bingham.

Sam is survived by a grandchild that he and his wife had raised, Becky Johnson and her husband Randy; his daughter, Diana (Phillips) Bingham; his son, Sammy Phillips and his wife, Vickie; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation was Wednesday, Oct. 15, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, in Ava. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today (Oct. 16) in the Clinkingbeard Chapel, with the Rev. Paul Welch officiating. Interment will follow in the Ava Cemetery. Military graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion Post 112 and the VFW Post 5993.
