Neva Piland, 99


She enjoyed crocheting, gardening and working on the farm with her husband “Doc.” Sarah Neva Piland, daughter of Abner Abel and Millie (Harper) Abel, was born on Nov. 26, 1908 in Squires, Mo., and passed away on Aug. 16, 2008 at Sonshine Manor in Republic, at the age of 99 years.

Neva was a resident of the Ava community for many years, moving from Ozark County. She was a homemaker. On April 26, 1927 Neva and Lloyd “Doc” Piland were united in marriage in Ava, and to this union three children were born. Neva was a lifelong member of the Mt. Lebanon General Baptist Church and attended Mt. Tabor Church after moving to Ava. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, gardening and working on the farm with her husband “Doc.”

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband “Doc” in 1973, six siblings, Opal Nash, Ruth Sherrill, Zella Bowles, Burl, Earl and Fred Abel.

Neva is survived by three children and their spouses, Norma and Jack Johnson, Springfield, Fae and Nuel Thomas, Thornfield, and Gerald and Mary Ellen Piland, Republic; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services were held Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 2 p.m., at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with Rev. Tom Johnson officiating. Interment followed in the Ava Cemetery.
