Vernon Lee Hicks, 90

Grew up and attended school in Douglas County Vernon Lee Hicks, son of the late Cecil and Maude (Tindle) Hicks, was born on March 14, 1917, in Buckhart, Mo., and departed this life on Sept. 25, 2007, in the Kabul Nursing Home in Cabool. He was 90 years, 6 months and 11 days of age.

Vernon grew up and attended school in Douglas County. He was united in marriage to Marie Collins on April 2, 1949, in Mtn. Grove, and two children were born to this union. In later years, they made their home on a farm in Douglas County where they raised cattle and enjoyed farming.

Vernon was a milk hauler for several years and later became a logger. He also hauled grain for many years to the area farmers. He loved fishing, gardening and working with his cattle and his mule, Kate, especially when plowing the garden every year. Most of all Vernon liked spending time with his family and visiting with his many friends and neighbors.

Besides his parents, he was pre¬ceded in death by his wife, Marie Hicks, on May 5, 1999; five brothers, Clyde Hicks, Tommy Hicks, Cecil Paul Hicks, Frank Hicks and Charles Hicks; and one sister, Burnice Hicks.

He is survived by his one son, Reggie Hicks and wife, Judith, of Florissant; one daughter, Susan Cave and her husband, Larry, of Springfield; one brother, Delmar Hicks and wife, Gail, Mtn. Grove; one sister, Vera Small, Shelbyville; three grandchildren, Scott Weath¬erman, Christine Jones and Aaron Hicks; four great-grandchildren, Krysten Weatherman, Candyce Weatherman, Cameron Weather¬man, and Kyra Jones; two step-grandchildren, Larry Cave Jr., and Angela Mace; three step-great-grandchildren; Zachary Cave, Dylan Cave and Jacob Mace; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m., in the Craig-Hurtt- Chapel, Mtn. Grove, with the Rev. Reg Kelly officiating. Interment was in Pleasant Mound Cemetery under the direction of Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home.
