Walter lived in Ava for over 23 years Walter William Fonter, son of Paul B. Fonter and Margaret Kolmar Fonter, was born on Aug. 25, 1922, in LaGrange, Ill., and passed from this life on May 13, 2007, in his home, Ava, with his loving family by his side at the age of 84.
Walter lived in Ava for over 23 years moving from Palos Hills, Ill. He was a retired cabinetmaker. Walter was an Army veteran and served his country in World War II.
On Oct. 18, 1947, Walter and Lois M. Schmidt were united in marriage in Argo-Summit, Ill., and to this union three children were born. Walter grew up in Lyons, Ill., and as a child was raised in the Lutheran Church and believed in the Lord.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Lois of the home in Ava; one son, Paul W. Fonter, Springfield; two daughters and their spouses, Liz and Ed Hergenroeder, Ava, and Laurie and John Samuelson, Sparta; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services were held Wednesday, May 16, at 2 p.m., in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Rev. Greg Dowler officiating. Interment followed in the Ava Cemetery with full military honors by Ava American Legion Post 112 and VFW Post 5993. The family requests memorials to Community Hospice of America, Mtn. Grove.
