Was born on Oct. 6, 1924, in Gentryville Toney Elroy Johnston, son of the late Logan and Ethel Mae (Sanders) Johnston, was born on Oct. 6, 1924, in Gentryville, and passed away on Jan. 1, 2007, at Webco Manor Nursing Home in Marshfield at the age of 82.
Toney grew up in Douglas County and attended the Hickory Flat School. He was united in marriage to Lorene Brixey on Dec. 1, 1952, in Mtn. Home, Ark. One son was born to this union.
Toney worked for several years at Swift Packing Company. In 1958 he purchased a dairy farm near Gentryville and farmed there until 1996. He sold the farm and he and Lorene moved to Marshfield to be near their son and his family.
Toney enjoyed being outdoors, especially when tending to his farm, and collecting rock and arrowheads on his property.
Toney and Lorene attended the Little Zion Church in Denlow for many years.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Helen McQuery.
He is survived by his wife, Lorene Johnston, of Marshfield; his son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Linda Kay Johnston, of Marshfield; two granddaughters, Phoebe Ward and her husband, Josh, and Elizabeth Johnston, and one great-granddaughter, Madelynn Ward, all of Marshfield; five brothers, E. Paul Johnston, of San Francisco, Calif., Geofrey Johnston and wife, Reah, of South St. Paul, Minn., Sam Johnston and wife, Mary, of Gentryville, Lee V. Johnston and wife, Ursula, Henryville, Ind., and Jack Johnston and wife, Dorothy, of Forsyth; one sister, Ann M. Campbell and husband, F.E., of Ozark; nieces; nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, in the Craig-Hurtt Chapel, Mtn. Grove, with the Rev. Rex Smith officiating. Burial was in Denlow Cemetery under the direction of Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mtn. Grove.
