Son of Simon Buchanan and Margaret “Maggie” Crawford Buchanan William Arthur Buchanan, the son of Simon Buchanan and Margaret “Maggie” Crawford Buchanan, was born Sept. 14, 1915 in Ava, and departed this life June 13, 2006 at the age of 90.
Arthur was life long resident of the Ava area. On Dec. 24, 1945, Arthur and Ruby Ellen Moore were united in marriage in Mtn. Home, Ark. Arthur and Ruby were blessed with three daughters. Arthur was a farmer and milked and raised Holstein and beef cattle for 45 yrs. He was one of the first farmers to introduce Holstein cattle to Douglas County.
He was a dedicated Republican and he loved Missouri Fox Trotters, and was a lifetime member of the Missouri Fox Trotters Association. He was also a member of the Ava Saddle Club. Arthur was known as the “man with the black mare.” He was a Christian and member of the Gentry Church for many years and he also served on the Denney Cemetery Board for years.
Arthur served his country during World War II with the U.S. Army and had also served with the Civilian Conservation Corps.
Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and four sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby of the home, Ava; three daughters, Carolyn and husband, Clyde “Bud” Ellison, Tulsa, Okla., Marilyn Cade, Falls Church, Va., and Margaret Ellen and husband, Bill Stirrat, Marshfield; six grandchildren, Susan and Andrew Cox, James and Bethany Ellison, Stephen and Johann Ellison, Shelia and Doug Miller, Brandy and Daniel Swofford and Kelly Taber; 12 great-grandchildren, Ciara Swofford, Austin Burkdoll, Alex Burkdoll, Julia Swofford, Kolton Davis, Jacey Swofford, Jonathan Ellison, Lucas Hutchens, Nathaniel Swofford, Alandra Hutchens, Brendan Cox, Ashley Hindes; four step-great-grandchildren, Dakota Smith, Garret Martin, Tristen and Alicia Stirrat; one sister, Lomus Grumbaugh, Springfield; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, June 16, in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Revs. David Dodson and Oscar Cunningham officiating. Interment will follow in the Denney Cemetery.
Full Military Honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 112 and VFW Post 5993. Visitation will be today (Thursday) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
