Virgil Wayne Simmons, 85

Son of James Hiram Simmons and Georgianna Futha Eldred Simmons, was born on April 10, 1919, in Fruita, Colo., and passed away on April 4, 2005, in Ava, at the age of 85 years. Virgil was a resident of the Ava community since 1992, moving from California. He was raised in Colorado. He moved to California, where he became a general conractor building custom homes. In 1978, Virgil and Elizabeth Wanda McAfee were united in marriage in Nevada. After retiring he loved building bird houses and bird feeders. Virgil also was a skilled cabinet maker.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents and two step-sons, Richard Stubbs and Danny Stubbs.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Simmons, of the home in Ava; three children, Florene A. Hunt, of Turlock, Calif., Dwight W. Simmons, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Linda D. Aycock, of Modesto, Calif.; four step-children, Gwen Reed, of Ava, Les Stubbs, of Modesto, Calif., and Ronnie and Larry Childers, both of Calif.; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; ten step-grandchildren; 13 step great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Cremation services are being conducted by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, and a memorial service will be conducted at a later date and time in California.
